Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania

A Medieval Scavenger Hunt

As part of my graduate studies at Templeton Honors College, this summer I was able to take a class entitled, "The Great Conversations: The Beautiful" with Professor Gregory Wolfe of Slant Books.  In it we read and discussed various philosophies on what Beauty is and did some fun activities to embody the practice of seeking out and enjoying Beauty. One of those activities was visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art and picking out one piece of art that we loved and one that we had a hard time liking. It was quite the collection that we later discussed in class the next day. While I was there, I worked on my post-residency project, in which I designed a simple scavenger hunt using animals to explore the 3rd Floor Medieval Rooms.

Here are questions to ask before and after your search and a list of the rooms and questions you can use to ask your child/students to find and pictures to guide you in finding them. It was an effort to encourage the students to observe carefully each of the pieces of art. I hope you enjoy exploring these amazing rooms as much as I did!

QUESTIONS:

Which one was your favorite?

Which one did you have a hard time liking?

What other pieces of art did you like?

How many different art mediums did you see?
